Are You Guilty Of Cheating?

Just days ago, this writer was discussing with another the way the elderly are often cheated by people. Two days later, she became witness to the very thing they had been discussing.

An elderly woman and a friend walked into a store in Wellington, Kansas and were greeted by a male employee.

The two ladies went about their business, selected a few groceries then headed to the check out. The first woman checked out with no problem. The second, however, didn’t fare so well.

The older woman handed the cashier, the same man who had earlier greeted them, the money to cover her bill, which was less than eleven dollars.

When the man returned her change, the elderly woman immediately realized the man had shorted her by several dollars.

“Sir,” she asserted in a firm, angry tone, “I gave you two ten-dollar bills.”

The man blushed and was quick to make excuses, yet he made no apology for his mistake. His obvious discomfiture at having been caught cheating this woman gave evidence that he had tried to do so deliberately.

“I was always taught to lay the bills on top of the register,” she told him, still angry. She repeated this again before finally getting a response from the man. Still making no apology, the man sheepishly replied that he had been taught the same thing. His overall demeanor only served to confirm his guilt at having tried to cheat the woman. She was furious at the man’s audacity, and she had good reason to be.

Jesus made it clear that God did not approve of people being cheated.

Scripture reads “…Thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the Lord thy God.” (Deuteronomy 25:15-16 KJV)

Dishonesty and crime continues to grow by leaps and bounds in these end-times. Morality is at an all-time low.

As believers, we must treat others with honesty and fairness, teaching our children to do the same. As role models, it is important that we display what is right and just in the Lord’s eyes.

Anything else would be deceitful and a lie.

“Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.” (Leviticus 19:11 KJV)

Wellington, Kansas is close to the Oklahoma border. This makes it easy to take day trips, in case one is interested in heading into Native America.

One such trip brought this writer and a friend to the Pioneer Woman’s Museum in Ponca City. This museum is dedicated to honoring women of great accomplishments throughout history. Whether they were astronauts, pioneers, free-thinkers, free spirits, fighters for women’s rights, or any of the long list of American women who have contributed to the greatness of this country, one thing stands out. Their determination to change what they felt needed to be changed in order to better the lives of women everywhere.

Women have just as much to contribute to the world as men. In Bible times, this was just as true then as it is now.

God uses women just as He does men as He seeks to share His Truth with the world.

One woman, Deborah, from the Book of Judges, was a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, and was a leader of Israel.

Claudia Miclaus of www.buzzle.com writes that “After a period of hardships, due to the fact that the people grew further away from God, God told Deborah to prepare for battle against the enemy of Israel at the time. She obeyed and her God inspired-courage was greater than that of Barak’s, the army commander at the time. He didn’t want to proceed and fight without her going along with them in the battle.” So, because of the way Barak went about obeying God, Deborah prophesied that Barak would not be honored and that the Lord would hand the enemy, Sisera, over to a woman instead. This did, in fact, happen. A woman defeated Sisera merely by hammering a tent peg through his temple while he slept. (Judges 4:1-10, 21)

Other women in the Bible used by God were Mary, the mother of Jesus (Luke 1), Queen Esther (the Book of Esther), Rahab the harlot (Joshua 2: 1-16), Miriam, Moses’ sister (Exodus 15: 20, 21) , and Abigail, one of the wives of King David (1 Samuel 15). All were used by God in different ways to carry out the Lord’s purposes.

Even today, God is opening doors for women to serve Him. We, as believers, should not allow these opportunities to pass us by.

People often relate money to God.

But it is man who has made going to church all about money, not God. Yet some ministries and churches in Wellington, Kansas and elsewhere place emphasis on money.

God should be first in your life.

His desire is not for money, but a place in our hearts.

While sitting in a restaurant, a man was overheard telling someone what had been done to him. You could hear the pain and disbelief in his voice.

The man’s job kept him on the road. He said that whenever he was in town, he would attend church and put twenty dollars into the collection basket.

That morning, the minister approached him and told him not to come back to church. He said that since the man wasn’t there every week, there was no point in his coming back. The man was ousted from his church, one he had faithfully given money to, out of the goodness of his heart, probably for most of his life.

Since he wasn’t able to give money every week, he wasn’t worthy of attending this church. No matter the man’s efforts to do what was right, when possible. It all boiled down to money.

Friends, this should not happen. Ever.

God accepts us for who we are. He doesn’t care if we are rich or poor. Like the widow, referred to in Luke 20:45-21:1-4, even if all we can afford to give is two pennies, if you are giving from the heart, then you are giving in accordance with God’s will. No man should dictate what a person is to give.

If you are attending a church that places its emphasis on money, then it would be best if you left that place anyways because clearly the Lord’s presence is not in that church.

Remember, God looks on the heart, not on how much money you give, how many church dinners you’ve served, or how many choirs you’ve been in. (1 Samuel 16:7 KJV)

Remember, God is not about money, but more about the state of our hearts than anything.

Because that is what God looks at.

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV)

Did you know that God is bigger than your problems?

The June 22, 2010 Neal Boortz radio talk show on KNSS Wichita made mention of an Argentinian couple who were so terrified after learning about Global Warming that they shot both of their two children and then committed suicide.

According to an article on www.InfoWars.com, “In a suicide note, reportedly discovered by police, the couple cited their extreme fears over the effects of global warming.”

“Crazy,” you say, but true nonetheless. Although this was an isolated incident, it only shows the power of the media and the government to affect lives.

But what people need to realize is that God, the Creator of our universe, is bigger than any problem that may come our way.

Victory over any problems that may beset us is found in Jesus Christ and in the Cross.

We need only keep our eyes on Him and trust Him to see us through every problem, every storm that comes our way.

Do not allow fear of the future or any media hype to help you to lose your focus on God. The enemy will use any weapon at his disposal to instill fear into you and try and destroy you. He hates God and anyone who worships Him.

So the next time you have a problem, whether financial, physical, or otherwise, turn your eyes on Jesus and don’t look back.

God is bigger than you, your problems, and every government and nation of the world.

It is He who will help you and grant you the victory over any situation.

So trust only in Him, be patient, and wait on Him to see you through. It is not as difficult as you may think.

Soaring With The Eagles

While attending a recent Eagles concert in Wichita, Kansas, this writer considered how this famous rock group has survived all these years. Growing up in the 70s, she has felt the group’s influence her entire life. As one of the band members remarked, they were now on their “assisted-living tour”, giving evidence of their long run of success.

Still going strong, the Eagles are an amazing, talented group of men who still manage to sell out every stadium seat.

Other popular bands have split up and gone their own ways, but not the Eagles. They are still as wonderful as ever they once were.

As this writer sat tapping her feet or cheering along with hundreds of other fans, she was reminded of one of her favorite Bible verses.

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 KJV)

As time passes, sometimes people grow weary of their day-to-day struggles with living.

Not everyone has had a successful life. Not everyone has fulfilled his potential. And not everyone has a bulging bank account to show for all of their hard work.

This is why it is important for believers to lean on God throughout their lives, as they run the race set before them. Because only those who make it to the end will receive their crown, their reward.

If we wait upon God, He will be sure to renew our strength as we grow older. He will mount us up with wings as eagles that will make our frail bodies stronger. When we grow weary with what life has to offer, He will keep us from fainting.

While sitting in a college classroom one afternoon, all one woman could think of was of how tired she was. A single parent, her life was busy and wearying. She wanted only to lay her head down on the desk and go to sleep. At that moment, while trusting God to help her get through another class, an overwhelming feeling of power washed over her. Amazed, she felt the tingling of God’s amazing strength flow through her. Rejuvenated, she sat up straighter, amazed, for God had renewed her strength.

Yes, this writer was truly amazed when that happened.

Freedom In Christ

People in Wellington, Kansas celebrated our nation’s independence last night. (July 4, 2010)

Skies lit up over Seller’s Park and other areas of Wellington with bright, noisy displays of fireworks as residents grouped along the streets or in their backyards to watch. The displays were so numerous that many didn’t even have to leave their backyards. They viewed the sights from various directions as many created their own fireworks displays.

Wellington is fortunate to have this freedom, since not all States allow it. As a former New Yorker, this writer can assure those in Kansas that the freedom to purchase and personally use fireworks is something that not everyone can enjoy in America.

But freedom in Christ is.

John MacArthur of www.biblebb.com says that “Christ set us free to experience true freedom. Christian freedom is freedom of conscience, freedom from a legal system that couldn’t be kept. It is freedom from the depressing awareness that we can’t measure up to God. Christians do measure up in Christ. We have been “accepted in the Beloved” (Ephesians. 1:6).

“Christianity is not slavery to a religious system; it is absolute freedom,” continues MacArthur. “Christian freedom is not freedom to sin; it’s freedom from the power of sin…Freedom in Christ isn’t freedom to ignore the law; it’s freedom to fulfill the law.

“Christian liberty is not freedom to indulge the flesh, but the capacity to use self-control. It is also not freedom to injure others, but to love them by ministering to them…Christian liberty affects our relationship to self, others, and God.

“Freedom is to be expressed by the Christian through self-control, love of others, and obedience to God’s law.

“The operation of Christian liberty is not automatic. We must walk in the Spirit. Rather than being under the control of a legal system, the believer has the potential of being controlled by a Person: God the Holy Spirit.”

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would…If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatian 5:16-25 KJV)

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty…” (Galations 5:13 KJV)
