It’s part of American culture. Using God’s name as a curse or swear word. At the Warren Theater in Wichita, Kansas, or any theater, you hear it said in any number of movies. We grow up hearing it, never thinking twice about it. It only reaffirms again the importance of watching our mouths.

Everyone is guilty of taking God’s name in vain in some way, thinking it harmless. The fact that no one swears using names of gods of other cultures is interesting since it demonstrates that they aren’t actual gods, or people would violate those names, too.

Only the name of the one true God has the power to infiltrate every part of our world. It is the only name by which history is divided, either B. C. (before Christ) or A. D. (Anno Domini – after death – or, in the year of our Lord), and reveals the truth of Jesus Christ.

The enemy loves it when we violate the Third Commandment of God. He would have us break every law of God, if he could.

“How many times have we heard, or said, ‘Oh God!’; ‘Oh my God!’; ‘Jesus!’; ‘Oh Jesus!’; ‘Oh Christ!’; ‘Jesus Christ!’; ‘God Almighty!’; or any of a thousand others just like those? Even Christians are guilty of saying things like, ‘Oh Lord!’; ‘My God!’; ‘Good God!’

“We’ve all done [it], but it is degrading to the Lord’s Name to throw it around so casually. Often, we are guilty of using slang expressions…which are actually derivatives from some form of God’s Name…‘Gosh’, ‘Golly’, ‘Gee’, ‘Gee whiz’, ‘Cripes’, ‘Criminy’, ‘Jeeze’.

Others are just a play on the mother of all curse words, ‘God Damn It.’ – ’Dog gone it’; ‘Gosh darn it’; ‘Dang nab it’; ‘Dad blame it’, etc. Often, men will attribute things to God which He had no part in by saying, ‘By God!’ Others will seek to invoke His Name by saying ‘God Almighty!’

“No matter how you say it…when we use the Lord’s Name in a vain way, we are guilty of violating the Holiest of all Names! [This includes] the little slang words we use when angry!” (www.sermonnotebook.org)

Walking with God in obedience means overcoming your bad habits. Be mindful of the words you speak.

Using God’s name as a swear word is one of the greatest sins we can ever commit. And God will not hold us guiltless.

“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.” (Exodus 20:7 KJV)
