A Wellington, Kansas woman and her two grandchildren made a birthday cake for a friend who lived a few blocks away. Hoping to surprise her, they decided to walk over to the friend’s house to present the cake.

Unfortunately, as the determined trio made their way along the uneven sidewalks, the woman tripped and fell, nosediving into the cake and the sidewalk.

The woman, clearly embarrassed before many of her neighbors, got up, brushed off the cake and icing from her person, then turned and returned home with the children. Briefly defeated, the woman decided she would just make another cake and try again later. She wasn’t about to let one uneven sidewalk ruin her plans.

Instead of allowing this obstacle to cause another spill or even allow her to give up the whole idea, she decided next time to walk around the problem or just drive over to her friend’s house, thereby avoiding the chance of another fall and another ruined cake.

Although this was a humiliating episode for a person with good intentions, the woman remained determined, positive, and optimistic.

Often, the enemy places barriers or obstacles in our path, to trip us up. His real intention is to invoke fear into us, thereby removing the love of God from our hearts:

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” (1John 4:18 KJV)

By keeping a positive attitude when faced with obstacles or other challenges as we go through life, we can be victorious, knowing there may be a lesson in what we are facing or have experienced.

Some situations may be meant to humble us in some way, if God feels we are getting to prideful. If that happens, a little soul-searching would be a good thing, as we contemplate the lesson at hand.

Otherwise, we should just hold fast to God, brush ourselves off, and not allow ourselves to be stopped in our tracks or sidetracked from whatever purpose God has for our lives.

Moving forward, we can walk with confidence and victory with God. Sure, we may be in for a few setbacks as we press toward our goal, but we won’t have to go through them alone.

God will be right there with us, helping and guiding us along the way.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love,
and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
