Charles Darwin wrote that “The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.”

Genesis 1:28 KJV says that man has been given “… dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

But this does not give man the right to be cruel to animals or abuse them.

Drowning unwanted kittens in a creek, deliberately running animals over in the street, using them for personal gain (i. e. cock fights, pit bull fights, etc.), starving them in cages, not caring for them in any way, etc., is not what God intended.

In fact, the Bible states that a righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.” (Proverbs 12:10 KJV)

We have all heard of such wicked men: Jeffrey Dahmer, David “Son of Sam” Berkowitz, Albert “The Boston Strangler” DiSalvo, and the like.

Fortunately, there are organizations out there that see to the needs of such living creatures, as God intended for us to do.

The Wellington Humane Society ( of Wellington, Kansas is one such organization that offers resources that “advocates the welfare and responsible care of animals, protects them from neglect and cruelty, and promotes humane awareness and compassion for all creatures great or small. [They] do this through humane education, spaying and neutering assistance, and [by] finding responsible homes for unwanted animals.”

Despite the state of our economy, the situation in Haiti, the poverty on our Indian reservations, and other realities of our century, we must not forget the needs of those who cannot help themselves. The Humane Society, regardless of where it is located, should be a factor in our consideration of donations. Without funding, these organizations might be forced to close. If this happens, these organizations may have no choice but to euthanize the living creatures it is trying so hard to help and protect.
