They are found on top of most Christmas trees in Kansas – in Wichita, Wellington, Arkansas City…everywhere. Not just in Kansas, but throughout the world.

You see them on people’s lapels. On stationery. In jewelry. In cookies. On shirts. You see them as statues or other ornaments.

People collect them, having shelves full of different images and knickknacks, thinking they are cute. And they usually are. Heck, there are even pretty pins representative of the zodiac, in twelve different colors.

You see them hanging in the streets, in doorways, lounging in front yards, and in most stores.

There are few places one doesn’t see them. They’ve made movies about them. People have even seen real ones, most commonly children.

And yes, this article is referring to:

Angels.

But did you know that God’s Word strictly forbids us from making any image of angels or other things in the heavens, on earth, or even in the waters? Because this could lead us to idolatry?

“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,” (Exodus 20:4-5 KJV)

Yet how many of us were taught this? Probably none of us.

Yes, the things men have created are often pretty and sparkly and cute. But they tempt us to a sin that few even realize is a sin.

God has always condemned the practice of idolatry. For those who have anything in the form of an angel or other heavenly thing in your homes, let it be known that you may be violating the second commandment of God.

Don’t justify it by saying how harmless these things are, that God won’t hold you guilty because you aren’t really worshipping man-made angels or other heavenly images, that they are just decorations. Know that anything taking your mind off of God is considered idolatry: statues, pictures, television, etc.

It is difficult, but you must learn to resist the temptation of purchasing anything related to angels or other forbidden images.

If bought with wrongful motives, God will hold you accountable.
